The Office for Climate Change Adaptation Coordination works with the Climate Change Impacts Observation and Monitoring Research Section, the Climate Change Impacts Assessment Research Section, and the Climate Change Adaptation Strategy Research Section to collect and organize information from inside and outside Japan on the impacts of and adaptation to climate change, provides technical support to prefectures and municipalities formulating climate change adaptation plans or develops adaptation measures for these local governments, and also works with climate change research institutes and local centers for climate change adaptation, etc. while paying attention to information on the impacts of climate change that affect each and every citizen, in order to promote adaptation to climate change.
In order to detect the impacts of climate change on the natural ecosystem and air pollution, etc. in the Asia-Pacific region including Japan, the Climate Change Impacts Observation and Monitoring Research Section conducts the necessary observation, detects long-term change by collecting and organizing observation data including ongoing and past ones, and analyzes the relationship with climate change. This section also conducts survey and research on establishing the theory (mechanisms) and techniques to determine the causes of climate change. Furthermore, this section studies development of a system for observing and monitoring the impacts of climate change.
The Climate Change Impacts Assessment Research Section refines techniques for assessing the impacts of climate change around the globe, in the Asia-Pacific region, and in Japan in a range of fields and conducts assessments on the impacts of climate change using updated weather scenarios and socioeconomic scenarios. This section also evaluates differences that occur depending on whether or not adaption for the impacts has been done. In addition, this section efficiently collects and organizes weather forecast information, corrects the information for bias, and is developing a system capable of providing climate scenarios for the entire globe and Japan.
The Climate Change Adaptation Strategy Research Section works with the Climate Change Impacts Observation and Monitoring Research Section and the Climate Change Impacts Assessment Research Section to identify gaps and adverse conditions that occur between adaptation plans, scientific knowledge, and implementation of adaptation and also examines the measures necessary for developing effective adaptation strategy plans. In addition, this section works on developing and managing the Climate Change Adaptation Information Platform and the Asia-Pacific Climate Change Information Platform.
